Govt ­policies must be in sync with needs of the population*

It was heartening to see, as reported your article on Friday, that Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley personally made a site visit to the area in Cedros affected by land slippage.
He was, however, quoted as saying: “In some cases, you just have to withdraw; and if it is a cliff that is collapsing, you can’t hold up a cliff, you just have to withdraw from the area.”
I have to respectfully disagree with Dr Rowley that the coastal erosion at Cedros could not have been mitigated.
As a geologist, the prime minister no doubt understands the vulnerability of the formations in that area, but he is neither qualified nor experienced to go from the problem definition to examining technical options for feasible engineering solutions.
