Tobago support for hurricane relief

The Tobago House of Assembly (THA) is leading Tobago's efforts to provide aid to the Caribbean islands impacted by Hurricane Irma.

The THA is asking the Tobago public to support these efforts by donating emergency relief supplies, including non-perishable food items, clothing and financial support. The Tobago Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to collect all donations.

These supplies can be dropped off at TEMA's headquarters at Fairfield Complex in Scarborough, or at TEMA's warehouse, located at Signal Hill next to the Army Camp. You can also show your support by donating to the Trinidad and Tobago Red Cross Society disaster relief fund account at Republic Bank, account number 180482517101.

Several Caribbean islands have been affected by the Hurricane, including Antigua and Barbuda, St Martin/St Maarten, Anguilla, St Bart's, the British and US Virgin Islands, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Chief Secretary Kelvin Charles is urging Tobagonians to join the assembly in supporting our Caribbean neighbours in need.

“Being disaster ready should mean not only that we are ready to respond when we face an emergency, but that we can also step forward to assist our neighbours in their time of need,” Charles stated.

“So, we encourage residents to donate what they can, as early as possible, and drop them in to our centres so they can be delivered to those who have been so harshly affected by the passing of Hurricane Irma.”

Anyone seeking further information can call the 211 Hotline. The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) is coordinating regional support for those affected by Hurricane Irma. Account details for CDEMA are listed below.

Water quality in focus

Every month, a Water Testing Programme is conducted to determine the quality of fresh water in Tobago.

This testing is being done throughout the island to ensure freshwater sources are of good quality.

Danica Marshall, an environmental officer at the Division of Infrastructure, Quarries and the Environment, said the testing also helps to determine how the island's waterways operate.

“These parameters include things like temperature, the PH of the water. We also test for conductivity, salinity, dissolved oxygen levels and nitride levels, as well as blue green algae levels and chlorophyll,” Marshall said.

There is another key use for the test results.

“…We can have a database for Tobago itself in terms of our water quality. We also want to compare the data that we get to national and international standards,” she added.

This comparison will help the island to detect when there are water sources that aren't up to standard.
