Tobago Jazz Experience completes 9th year

Wyclef Jean gets up close and personal with the audience at World Music Night

SCARBOROUGH Tobago, Tuesday 2nd May 2017: The Tobago Jazz Experience (TJE) 2017 has come to a close after two weeks of film, fashion and music that took patrons on a journey around the island.

TJE's 9th year saw the festival evolve to include new events and expand to capture more diverse tastes. Apart from the addition of three new items to the calendar: Tobago Jazz Film Festival, Jazz in the Garden and NLCB Sun, Sea & Jazz;, this year also signaled an uptake in stakeholder and talent participation as new venues joined the stakeholder-led Jazz on the Move series.

As the tagline states, the Tobago Jazz Experience is about much more than music. It remains an opportunity to highlight the island's entrepreneurs in film, fashion, arts and crafts and culinary. The Division of Tourism, Culture and Transportation aims to develop creative ways for visitors and residents alike to acquaint themselves with the Destination's varied offerings and TJE is one of the channels through which this objective is met.

As the festival grows in age and scope, sponsors continue to renew their commitment, with some making significant strides in bolstering their involvement with the Division. NLCB Jazz on the Waterfront and NLCB Sun, Sea & Jazz are prime examples of the Division's growing partnership with the business and commercial sectors, as the National Lotteries Control Board adopted the events, fully funding both affairs.

The final weekend of TJE saw back to back concerts that encapsulated the essence of the entire festival. Friday evening's World Music Night brought a range of local, regional and international acts to the Tobago stage, including Haitian artiste Wyclef Jean who delivered an exciting performance. Saturday's Sun, Sea & Jazz transformed Pigeon Point Heritage Park into a relaxing atmosphere with music, craft, and fun in the Tobago sun; and the entire festival came to a climax with Beach Jazz Fiesta on Sunday evening, where an eclectic performance by the iconic Grace Jones closed the show.

The Division offers its sincerest gratitude to all patrons, sponsors and stakeholders in the corporate and hospitality sectors, as well as members of the media for once again working with us to create a memorable Tobago Jazz Experience. Moving forward, we intend to engage all stakeholders in constructive and productive dialogue about the now completed Tobago Jazz Experience 2017, in order to make a well-informed decision about the way forward for the event.
